Which certification has the best ROI per study hour? All 14 ranked
By Bilal Tahir · Published · Numbers rechecked yearly
Ranked by annual pay lift per hour of study, the Certified Kubernetes Administrator leads the 14 certifications we track at roughly $149 per study hour, ahead of the PMP at $109 and the AWS Solutions Architect Associate at $93. The CFP trails at about $20.
The short answer
Measured as annual pay lift per hour of study, the Certified Kubernetes Administrator is the strongest of the 14 certifications we track: about $149 of annual pay lift for every hour you study, off 60-120 hours and $460-$750 (Linux Foundation, September 2026). The PMP is second at roughly $109 an hour and the AWS Solutions Architect Associate third at about $93, on a $150 exam fee (AWS, September 2026).
At the other end: the CPA at about $28 an hour, the Google Data Analytics Certificate at $25, and the CFP at $20. None of those three is a bad purchase. They are long, and a per-hour metric punishes length without mercy.
The honest verdict up front: this ranking is a screening tool, not a buying decision. It tells you which credentials deliver the most money for the least calendar time. It cannot tell you whether the pay lift will arrive at all, because for nine of the 14 nobody has published a credible effect size, and every published figure in this field comes from people who volunteered their own salary.
If you want the same arithmetic on your own salary, prep budget and study pace, the ROI calculator runs it. If you want the single credential this table ranks second, the full cost and break-even breakdown is in PMP ROI in 2026.
Method: how we computed dollars of pay lift per study hour
Four inputs, all of them already published on this site, so you can check every cell.
- Cost. The midpoint of
total_cost_usdon each certification page: exam fees, required training and typical materials, not lost wages. For the PMP that is the midpoint of $620-$3,200; for PL-300 the midpoint of $165-$350. - Hours. The midpoint of
total_hours, meaning total study and practice for someone who does not already know the material. - Anchor salary. The mid-career median of the first career listed on the certification page, taken from our career data. The CKA is anchored to Cloud / DevOps Engineer at $134,050; the PMP to Project Manager at $102,320; PL-300 to Data Analyst at $88,000.
- Pay lift percentage. Our reading of the evidence on each certification page, expressed as a percentage of the anchor salary.
The formula is deliberately boring:
- Annual pay lift in dollars = anchor salary x lift percentage
- Dollars per study hour = annual pay lift / midpoint study hours
- Break-even in months = midpoint cost / (annual pay lift / 12)
So the CKA's $149 is $134,050 x 10% = $13,405 of annual lift, divided by 90 hours. The PMP's $109 is $102,320 x 16% = $16,371, divided by 150 hours.
Three of the 14 carry no percentage at all: the Google Cybersecurity Certificate, the SIE and Series 7, and the SOA preliminary exams P and FM. They appear in the table with their cost and hours and a blank in the lift column. A blank is not a zero. It means no defensible number exists: FINRA licences gate entry to an occupation rather than adding a premium to it, and actuarial exam pay steps are per-exam increments rather than a percentage on a salary.

A few things to notice before you read the order as gospel.
The top three are within noise of each other. CKA at $149, PMP at $109 and AWS Solutions Architect Associate at $93 all sit inside the error bars of a study-hours estimate. Move the CKA's hours from 90 to 130 and it drops behind both. Treat the top three as a tier, not a podium.
Cheap does not mean efficient. The Google Data Analytics Certificate is tied for cheapest on the whole list at $147-$294 (Coursera, September 2026) and still finishes tenth of the eleven ranked, because 180-240 hours buys a 6% lift on a $88,000 anchor. The PL-300 costs a comparable $165-$350 and finishes fifth, because it asks for 40-90 hours instead of 210. Same money, a third of the time, three times the per-hour return.
Expensive does not mean inefficient either. The CISSP runs $900-$5,500 and still places fourth at about $83 an hour, because a 15% lift on a $124,000 cybersecurity analyst anchor is $18,600 a year against 225 hours of study.
Every ranked credential repays its fees fast. The slowest is the CFP at 6.2 months of the modelled pay gap. The fastest is AWS Solutions Architect Associate at eleven days. That tells you the fees are not the real cost, which is the point of the section below on your own hours.
The top three, and why they are there
CKA ($149/hour). A $445 list-price exam with one free retake included (Linux Foundation, September 2026), 60-120 hours of practice, and a two-hour hands-on test in a live cluster with no multiple choice. Hiring managers treat it as evidence because you cannot pass it by recognising answers. The Linux Foundation discounts it heavily several times a year, often 40-75% off, which pushes the real cost toward the bottom of our $460-$750 range. It is anchored to a $134,050 cloud and DevOps median, the third-highest anchor in the table.
PMP ($109/hour). The only credential here whose premium comes from a published salary survey rather than our inference. PMI's Earning Power: Project Management Salary Survey, 14th Edition (14,628 respondents across 21 countries, fielded March-April 2025) reports a 17% global median premium, and a US median of $135,000 for certified respondents against $109,157 for the uncertified. We model 16%, slightly below PMI's global figure and far below the 24% US gap, for reasons in the caveats section. Costs rose on 6 August 2026: $445 for members, $675 for non-members. The full arithmetic is in PMP ROI in 2026, and Andrew Ramdayal's 35-hour prep course is the cheapest legitimate way to clear the contact-hours requirement.
AWS Solutions Architect Associate ($93/hour). A $150 exam plus $50-$100 of course and practice-test material is the smallest cash outlay of any credential in the top half. Skillsoft's IT Skills and Salary Report places AWS credentials among the higher-paying certifications, but it publishes the average salary of holders rather than a premium over a matched control, and its published averages for this exam vary widely between editions. We model a conservative 8%. AWS's own Cloud Solutions Architect certificate on Coursera covers roughly 62 hours of the prep.
The bottom three, and why people still do them
CPA ($28/hour). Four exam sections at about $262.64 each plus roughly $96 of application fees per section, and a Becker or UWorld review course on top: $3,000-$6,800 and 320-500 hours (NASBA and UWorld, September 2026). The AICPA reports CPAs earning roughly 10-15% more than non-certified accountants. The per-hour figure understates it badly, because the CPA licence carries sign-off authority. No amount of Kubernetes skill lets you sign an audit opinion. Licences that gate work always look bad on a productivity metric and good on a career.
Google Data Analytics ($25/hour). 180-240 hours for $147-$294 at $49 a month (Coursera, September 2026), or free through Coursera financial aid. It ranks low because it is a beginner curriculum, not a hiring credential, and it is competing against the millions of other people who also finished it. Take it for the structure, which is genuinely good, then treat the portfolio as the thing that gets you hired. That argument is laid out in full in How to become a data analyst with no degree, and if you are buying more than one certificate, Coursera Plus at $59 a month or $399 a year beats paying per certificate.
CFP ($20/hour). $2,200-$12,000 and 400-1,000 hours, because the CFP Board Registered Program is seven courses plus a capstone before you sit a $925 exam. It finishes last on this metric and still makes sense, because many firms will not let an adviser lead client relationships without it. You are buying permission, not a percentage.
The orderings that surprised us
The CFA is mid-table, not last. We expected 900-1,200 hours across three levels to bury it. It lands eighth at about $54 an hour, purely because its anchor career is investment banking analyst at a $375,000 mid-career median. A 15% lift on $375,000 is $56,250, the largest annual dollar figure in the entire table. The metric is not measuring the CFA's efficiency so much as the salary of the industry it points at. If you are studying CFA Level I to move into FP&A rather than the buy side, the honest anchor is $110,000, and the CFA goes straight to last place at about $16 an hour.
PL-300 beats Google Data Analytics by a factor of three despite near-identical price tags, because Microsoft's Power BI exam assumes you already know the tool and tests you for 100 minutes, while Google's certificate teaches you the field from zero. Those are different products that happen to cost the same. Microsoft's own renewal is free and annual, done by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Microsoft's Power BI Data Analyst certificate on Coursera includes a 50% PL-300 voucher, which is the cheapest legitimate route to the exam.
Security+ places seventh, below every cloud credential. CompTIA Security+ costs $439 direct from CompTIA as of 1 June 2026, with authorised resellers at about $373. Its documented value is access rather than premium: it is an approved DoD 8140 baseline for IAT Level II, which gates a large share of US federal and defence-contractor security work. A percentage-of-salary metric cannot see a job you would not have been allowed to apply for. The same applies to the Google Cybersecurity Certificate, which sits outside the ranking entirely.
The FRM outranks the CFA at about $80 an hour, on 400-600 hours against the CFA's 900-1,200. GARP publishes no compensation study at all, so its 10% is our estimate anchored to a $400,000 quantitative analyst median. This is the single least reliable row in the table and we would rather say so than let it sit there looking authoritative.
What a per-hour ranking gets wrong
This is the part most certification ROI articles leave out, so read it before you spend anything.
Nine of the eleven percentages are our inference, not a published effect size. Only two trace to a stated premium: the PMP (PMI's 17% global, 24% US gap) and the CPA (AICPA's 10-15%). The rest are our reading of survey averages, job-posting demand and issuer marketing. Skillsoft's IT Skills and Salary Report, which underpins several of the tech rows, is a voluntary online survey of people who opted in, and it reports the average salary of holders rather than the difference a certification made to any one of them.
Self-reported pay lifts are selection, not causation. The people who pass the CFA, the PMP or the CISSP differ systematically from the people who do not: more experience, more employer support, more ambition, and often a promotion already in motion. PMI's own survey is answered by PMI members and certificate holders, who have an obvious interest in the answer. A 24% US gap between certified and uncertified project managers is real as a description of two groups; it is not a forecast of what happens to your salary if you pass an exam. Where the difference matters, we modelled the lower number.
The anchor salary does most of the work. Change which career a credential points at and the ranking moves more than any change to fees or hours.
The table ignores failure. CFA pass rates run about 40-45% per level and the CFP's recent pass rate is about 67%. A ranking built on first-time passes flatters every long exam in the list. Add one CFA retake and its cost rises by roughly $1,140 and its hours by 200 or more.
It also ignores renewal. The CISSP costs $135 a year to maintain (ISC2, September 2026), Security+ renews every three years, PMP renewal is $60 for members and $150 for non-members every three years plus 60 PDUs, and the CKA expires after two years. A per-hour figure computed at the moment of passing quietly assumes the credential is permanent. None of them is.
| Certification | Anchor used in the ranking | $ per study hour | Plausible alternative anchor | $ per study hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CFA | Investment banking analyst, $375,000 | $54 | FP&A analyst, $110,000 | $16 |
| FRM | Quantitative analyst, $400,000 | $80 | FP&A analyst, $110,000 | $22 |
| PMP | Project manager, $102,320 | $109 | Management consultant, $145,000 | $155 |
| PL-300 | Data analyst, $88,000 | $81 | FP&A analyst, $110,000 | $102 |
| CISSP | Cybersecurity analyst, $124,000 | $83 | Cloud / DevOps engineer, $134,050 | $89 |
Break-even in months, once you price your own hours
Fees repay almost immediately in every case. That is the least interesting fact on this page, because the fee was never the expensive part.
Put a value on your own study time and the picture changes. The right column below charges study hours at $30 an hour, which is roughly what an hour of a working adult's evening is worth if they could sell it. It is an arbitrary rate, deliberately so: pick your own and the ordering barely moves, which is the one genuinely reassuring thing about this metric.
The CPA, the CFP and the Google Data Analytics Certificate are the only three where the fully loaded payback runs past a year. For the CFP that is 24 months, and it is still worth doing if you intend to lead client relationships, because the alternative is not being allowed to.
One caveat on the whole column: it assumes the pay lift starts the month you pass. In practice a certification converts to money at a review cycle, a promotion or a job change. Add three to nine months of lag to everything below, and add the possibility that it never converts at all.
| Certification | Mid cost | Mid hours | Modelled annual lift | Fees repaid in | Fees + time repaid in |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CKA | $605 | 90 | $13,405 | 0.5 months | 3.0 months |
| AWS Solutions Architect Associate | $333 | 115 | $10,724 | 0.4 months | 4.2 months |
| PMP | $1,910 | 150 | $16,371 | 1.4 months | 4.7 months |
| PL-300 | $258 | 65 | $5,280 | 0.6 months | 5.0 months |
| FRM | $2,500 | 500 | $40,000 | 0.8 months | 5.2 months |
| CompTIA Security+ | $970 | 115 | $8,680 | 1.3 months | 6.1 months |
| CISSP | $3,200 | 225 | $18,600 | 2.1 months | 6.4 months |
| CFA | $6,510 | 1,050 | $56,250 | 1.4 months | 8.1 months |
| Google Data Analytics | $221 | 210 | $5,280 | 0.5 months | 14.8 months |
| CPA | $4,900 | 410 | $11,370 | 5.2 months | 18.2 months |
| CFP | $7,100 | 700 | $13,800 | 6.2 months | 24.4 months |
Run it on your own numbers
The ranking uses a national median as the anchor because it has to pick something. Your number is not the national median.
The ROI calculator takes your current salary, the credential you are considering and your realistic weekly study hours, and returns the same three outputs: dollars of lift per study hour, months to repay fees, months to repay fees plus time. Two inputs change the answer more than anything else.
Your actual salary. If you earn $65,000 and the table anchors a credential to $134,050, halve every dollar figure for that row. Percentage lifts scale with the base.
Whether a raise is actually on the table. The single highest-return case for any certification on this list is the one where your employer has already told you what it unlocks: a pay band, a billable rate, a contract requirement, a promotion gate. In that case the modelled percentage is irrelevant and you should use the real number. The second-highest is a legal or contractual gate, like DoD 8140 or a FINRA licence, where the return is binary rather than a percentage.
If no raise is on the table and no gate applies, assume the lift is zero until proven otherwise, and buy the credential for the curriculum instead. That is a legitimate reason to spend $294, and a poor reason to spend $6,800.

If you are quoting a single figure, quote it with its anchor, because the anchor is doing the work: "the Certified Kubernetes Administrator returns about $149 of modelled annual pay lift per study hour, anchored to a $134,050 cloud engineering median (Salary Roadmap, September 2026)".
If you are rebuilding it, every input is on the individual certification pages: cost range, study hours, the pay-lift claim and its source. The percentages are ours and we would rather you disagreed with them out loud than adopted them silently.
We refresh fees annually, or sooner when an issuer changes price. The last such change was PMI's on 6 August 2026 and CompTIA's on 1 June 2026, both reflected above.

Questions people ask
Which certification has the best return on investment in 2026?
On annual pay lift per hour of study, the Certified Kubernetes Administrator leads our 14 at about $149 an hour: $460-$750 and 60-120 hours against a $134,050 cloud engineering median. The PMP follows at about $109 and the AWS Solutions Architect Associate at $93. On absolute dollars rather than efficiency the answer is different, because the CFA's modelled lift is $56,250 a year against the CKA's $13,405. Which question you are asking decides the answer: efficiency favours short technical exams, absolute money favours long finance credentials pointed at high-paying industries.
Do certifications actually increase your salary, or is that marketing?
Both, and the evidence is weaker than the marketing implies. Only two of the eleven premiums we model come from a published figure: PMI reports a 17% global median premium for PMP holders and a US gap of $135,000 against $109,157, and the AICPA reports CPAs earning 10-15% more than non-certified accountants. Every one of these is a comparison between two self-selected groups, not a measurement of what a certification did to one person's pay. The reliable cases are narrow: a contractual gate such as DoD 8140, a licence such as the CPA or a FINRA registration, or an employer who has already named the band the credential unlocks.
What is the cheapest certification that leads to a well-paid job?
By cash outlay, the AWS Solutions Architect Associate at $150 for the exam plus $50-$100 of materials, anchored to a $134,050 cloud and DevOps median. By time, Microsoft's PL-300 at 40-90 hours and $165-$350, which appears by name in Power BI analyst postings. The Google Data Analytics Certificate is cheaper still at $147-$294 and free through Coursera financial aid, but it takes 180-240 hours and functions as a curriculum rather than a hiring credential, which is why it finishes tenth of eleven on pay lift per study hour.
What pays more, the PMP or the CFA?
The CFA, by a wide margin in absolute dollars, and the PMP by a wide margin per hour. We model the CFA at $56,250 of annual lift because it is anchored to a $375,000 investment banking median, against the PMP's $16,371 on a $102,320 project management median. But the CFA takes 900-1,200 hours across three levels with pass rates around 40-45% per level, while the PMP takes 100-200 hours. Anchor the CFA to an FP&A salary of $110,000 instead and it falls to last place in our table at about $16 per study hour.
Why are the Google Cybersecurity, Series 7 and SOA exams not ranked?
Because no defensible percentage premium exists for them, and inventing one would make the table worse. FINRA's SIE and Series 7 are a legal requirement to sell securities, so they gate entry to the occupation rather than adding a premium within it. The SOA preliminary exams pay in per-exam increments on an entry actuarial salary rather than as a percentage lift. Google's certificate reports a 75% positive-career-outcome figure, which is a self-selected graduate survey rather than a pay measurement. All three appear in the table with cost and hours and a blank lift column.
How long does a certification take to pay for itself?
The fees repay almost immediately if the pay lift arrives: every one of the eleven ranked certifications recovers its midpoint cost in 6.2 months or less of the modelled pay gap, and the AWS Solutions Architect Associate does it in eleven days. The realistic figure prices your study time too. At $30 an hour for study, the CKA repays in about three months, the PMP in 4.7, the CPA in 18.2 and the CFP in 24.4. Add three to nine months of lag, because a certification converts to money at a review cycle or a job change, not on the day you pass.
