What is the SOA Exam P and FM?

The SOA Exam P and FM is the first two preliminary actuarial exams jointly sponsored by the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society: Exam P on probability and Exam FM on financial mathematics, both computer-based multiple-choice papers sat year-round at Prometric centres, issued by Society of Actuaries (SOA); both exams are jointly sponsored with the Casualty Actuarial Society. It is also written as Exam P, Exam FM, SOA preliminary exams, actuarial exams P and FM, Probability and Financial Mathematics exams.

Exam P and Exam FM are the first two preliminary exams on the path to Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) and, for property and casualty candidates, to CAS credentials. Exam P tests probability - univariate and multivariate distributions, expectation, conditional probability, and risk-related applications - while Exam FM tests interest theory, annuities, loans, bonds, immunisation and basic derivatives. Both are computer-based multiple-choice exams administered year-round at Prometric centres under continuous registration, so you pick your own date rather than waiting for a sitting window.

They are the standard entry ticket to the actuarial profession. Employers hiring entry-level actuarial analysts almost universally expect one or two passed exams on a graduate CV, and most then fund further exams with paid study time and raises per pass. Because there is no degree or experience prerequisite, the pair is also the cleanest credential-based route into a quantitative, well-paid career for maths, statistics, economics and engineering graduates who did not study actuarial science. Roughly 45-50% of candidates pass each sitting, and the population is already self-selected and quantitative, so these are genuinely hard exams.

Is the SOA Exam P and FM worth it in 2026?

Exam P and Exam FM are worth it if you intend to become an actuary, because employers use passed exams as the hiring screen and then fund the rest; they are not worth it as a general quantitative credential, since no data science or trading employer recognises them.

Passing P and FM is worth it if you want to be an actuary, and it is close to the only way in. Employers use exam passes as the hiring screen for entry-level analyst roles, most will not interview a graduate with zero passes, and once hired the firm typically pays for every subsequent exam plus 100 or more study hours a year and a raise per pass. Two exams cost about USD 550 in fees and, with Coaching Actuaries, another USD 400-1,200 in materials - a very cheap option on a career with a median wage roughly three times the national average. It is also a reasonable hedge for a quantitative graduate weighing data science: the material genuinely overlaps with probability and financial mathematics. It is not worth it if you are not going to pursue the credential to at least ASA, because two preliminary exams on their own signal nothing outside actuarial hiring - no data science or quant trading employer cares. It is also a poor fit if you dislike long, solitary, heavily timed problem-solving, since the ASA track takes most people four to seven years and ten or more assessments. Do not start without checking that your target market (life, health, P&C, pensions, consulting) is hiring in your region.

The cheapest realistic path is the SOA's free sample questions and solutions plus a Coaching Actuaries ADAPT practice licence at USD 195 per exam, stepping up to the USD 618 Learn and Practice bundle with a pass guarantee if you need taught material. Budget about 300 hours per exam, so 600 to 800 hours across the pair, which is six to fourteen months for most candidates working or studying at the same time.

SOA Exam P and FM FAQ

What do SOA Exam P and Exam FM cost in 2026, including study materials?

USD 275 each, so USD 550 for the pair, under the SOA fee schedule updated 16 December 2025, and the fee includes electronic access to the required study notes. Materials are the larger cost: Coaching Actuaries is USD 195 for an ADAPT practice licence or USD 618 for the Learn and Practice bundle with a pass guarantee, and an ASM manual runs USD 150 to USD 250. All in, most candidates spend USD 940 to USD 2,100 on both exams.

Should I take Exam P or Exam FM first as a beginner?

Either, and it depends on your strengths rather than any rule. Take Exam P first if you are comfortable with multivariable calculus and probability distributions; take Exam FM first if you are stronger in algebra and finance, since FM is generally considered the more approachable paper. Recent pass rates are close: 44.7% on Exam P in May 2026 and 48.8% on Exam FM in April 2026. Employers do not care about the order, only about how many you have passed.

How often can I sit Exam P and Exam FM, and when are the sittings?

Whenever you are ready. Both exams use continuous registration with year-round Prometric sittings, so you choose your own date rather than waiting for a fixed window, which is a real advantage over exam cycles such as the CFA or FRM. The SOA does impose a waiting period before you can re-sit an exam you failed, so check the current registration page for the interval before booking a backup date. Seats at popular centres go early in busy months.

Do I need an actuarial science degree to sit the SOA preliminary exams?

No, there is no prerequisite of any kind. Plenty of successful candidates come from mathematics, statistics, economics, physics, engineering and computer science, and the exams are open to anyone who registers and pays the USD 275 fee. What you genuinely need is multivariable calculus for Exam P and comfort with compound interest algebra for Exam FM. A relevant degree helps mainly because it usually comes with the three VEE topics you will need later for the ASA designation.

Do actuarial exam passes expire if I take a break from studying?

No. Preliminary exam credit is permanent, carries no maintenance fee and creates no continuing education obligation until you actually hold a credential, and VEE credits and modules do not expire either. That makes the pair unusually low-risk to start: a pass you earn now still counts if you come back to the track in five years. Continuing professional development requirements begin only once you are an Associate or Fellow.

How long does it take to pass both Exam P and Exam FM while working full time?

Six to fourteen months. Budget about 300 hours per exam, so 600 to 800 hours in total, which at ten to twelve hours a week is roughly five to six months each. Because registration is continuous you can book each sitting when your practice scores say you are ready, rather than waiting for a fixed window. Most working candidates pass one, take a short break, then start the second; trying to prepare for both at once is how people burn out.

SOA Exam P and FM vs the CFA: which is the better route into a quantitative finance career?

Different careers, not different routes to the same one. Two actuarial exams cost about USD 550 in fees and 600 to 800 hours and are the entry screen for insurance and pensions work, where the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median actuary wage at USD 130,000 in May 2025 and projects 9% growth to 2035. The CFA runs roughly USD 3,520 to USD 9,500 and 900 to 1,200 hours across three levels and points at investment research and portfolio management. Pick by the industry you want, because neither transfers well to the other.

Are Exam P and Exam FM worth it in 2026 for a career changer with a maths degree?

Yes, if you are genuinely aiming at actuarial work and no if you are hedging. They are close to the only way in: most employers will not interview an entry-level applicant with zero passes, and once you are hired the firm typically pays for every later exam plus paid study hours and a raise per pass. Two exams on their own signal nothing outside actuarial hiring, though, and the full ASA track takes most people four to seven years. Check that insurers in your region are hiring first.
