PMP: cost, study hours and pass rate

USD 445 for PMI members and USD 675 for non-members, following the increase on 6 August 2026 from USD 405 and USD 555. Since PMI membership runs about USD 139 to USD 159 a year, joining first is clearly cheaper than paying the non-member rate: membership closes a USD 230 gap on a single sitting. Budget for the 35 contact hours of education as well, which a Udemy course covers for USD 10 to USD 20 on sale, and a retake if you need one.

No, but it changes how much experience PMI requires. With a four-year degree you need 36 months of leading projects; with a high school diploma or associate degree you need 60 months. Both pathways also require 35 hours of project management education or a current CAPM certification, completed before you apply. From the July 2026 update the qualifying experience can come from the last ten years rather than the last eight, which helps anyone returning to project work after a gap.

PMI selects a random share of applications for audit and asks for signed verification of your project experience from supervisors or clients, plus copies of your education certificates. You have 90 days to respond, and the review typically takes a few working days once everything arrives. The practical lesson is to describe your projects accurately and to name verifiers you are still in contact with, because chasing a former manager for a signature is what actually delays people.

Both, roughly evenly, and the balance changed on 9 July 2026. The exam content outline now weights People at 33%, Process at 41% and Business Environment at 26%, against 42%, 50% and 8% before, so there is far more on strategy, compliance, benefits and organisational change than in the older version. Predictive, agile and hybrid approaches are all in scope, and preparation built only on waterfall process groups is out of date. The exam also moved to 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks.

60 professional development units every three years plus a renewal fee of USD 60 for PMI members or USD 150 for non-members. At least 35 of those units must be Education units with a minimum of 8 in each of the three Talent Triangle areas, and no more than 25 can come from Giving Back. Many units are free: PMI webinars, chapter events and 'working as a professional' hours from your own job. The cost is mostly attention rather than money, but it never ends.

CAPM, because the PMP will not accept you yet. CAPM has no project-leadership experience requirement, needs 23 contact hours of education rather than 35, and costs about USD 225 for PMI members against USD 445 for the PMP. The PMP demands 36 months of leading projects with a degree or 60 months without, verified and randomly audited, so the application is the real gate. CAPM also counts as the education prerequisite later. PRINCE2 is the equivalent question in the United Kingdom and much of Europe, where it, not the PMP, is the public-sector standard.

Two to six months. Budget 100 to 200 study hours in total: about 35 of those are the required contact hours from a prep course, and the rest is practice questions, which is what actually moves scores on this exam. At eight to ten hours a week most candidates sit the exam around month three. Add several weeks before that for the application itself, since PMI reviews it and may audit, and your testing window only opens once it is approved.

Usually not yet, because you cannot qualify. PMI requires 36 or 60 months of leading projects, verified and subject to audit, so a career changer with no project leadership history is ineligible no matter how much they study. The route that works is CAPM or a coordinator role first, then the PMP once the months exist. If you already lead projects under another title, the case is strong: PMI's 14th salary survey put United States PMP holders at a median of USD 135,000 against USD 109,157 for the non-certified.
