CompTIA Security+: cost, study hours and pass rate

USD 439 for a voucher bought directly from CompTIA, confirmed on CompTIA's store in September 2026, following the 1 June 2026 price increase from USD 425. Authorised training partners resell vouchers at roughly 10% to 15% off, typically USD 373 to USD 395, which is worth the five minutes it takes to find one. Preparation can add almost nothing - Professor Messer's video course is free on YouTube - or USD 1,000 to USD 1,300 if you buy CompTIA's CertMaster Learn and Labs bundle with a voucher and retake included.

750 on a scale of 100 to 900, from a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes. The performance-based simulation questions appear first and are worth more than the multiple-choice items, so the standard advice is to skim them, flag anything that will take more than a couple of minutes, clear the multiple-choice questions, and come back. Candidates who fail commonly report spending twenty minutes on the first simulation and then running out of clock. CompTIA does not publish pass rates for any of its exams.

No. CompTIA recommends Network+ and about two years of IT administration experience in a security or systems administrator role, but both are recommendations rather than requirements, and plenty of candidates pass with neither. The caveat is that a large part of Security+ assumes networking fundamentals - subnets, ports, protocols, routing basics - so if yours are weak you will end up learning them anyway, just without the certificate. Taking Network+ first adds roughly USD 400 and two months; learning the same material from free resources adds only the time.

Three routes. Earn 50 continuing education units across the three-year cycle and pay the CE fee of about USD 50 a year or USD 150 per cycle; buy a CertMaster CE course as a one-time purchase of roughly USD 129 to USD 189, which includes the CE fee; or pass a higher CompTIA certification such as CySA+, PenTest+ or SecurityX, which renews Security+ automatically. The third option is the one most people in the field take, because it renews the credential and adds a new one in the same sitting rather than accumulating webinar hours.

Do not wait. CompTIA's exam page lists SY0-701 English retirement as 11 June 2027, with Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai following on 13 August 2027. A certification earned on SY0-701 stays valid for three years from the date you pass, regardless of when the exam version retires, so passing now costs you nothing. Waiting for a successor means studying from thin materials with no established question banks or community notes, which is the worst position to prepare from. Book the version with mature resources.

Most candidates need 80 to 150 hours, which is two to four months at eight to twelve hours a week. If you already work in IT support or systems administration, the low end is realistic: Professor Messer's free video course, one set of Jason Dion practice exams, and enough repetition on ports, protocols and cryptography terms to stop losing easy questions. With no IT background, plan for the high end and add time for networking fundamentals. The readiness test is scoring consistently above 85% on practice exams you have not seen before, not simply finishing a course.

Yes as a door-opener, no as a job guarantee. Security+ gives recruiters a concrete reason to move your CV forward and gives you a coherent syllabus for the vocabulary, and for United States federal or defence work it is an approved DoD 8140 IAT Level II baseline, so without it you are simply not eligible for a large class of roles. The honest caveat is that the market is saturated with Security+ holders who have never touched a security information and event management tool. Build something alongside it: a home lab, a detection project, or a documented incident write-up.

Do the Google Cybersecurity Certificate first if you are starting from nothing, then Security+ as the credential that actually gets screened on. The Google certificate is a curriculum - cheap on a Coursera subscription, hands-on, and good at teaching the vocabulary - but employers do not filter on it. Security+ costs USD 439 and is the one named in job postings and in the Department of Defense 8140 baseline list. Doing Google first and Security+ second is a reasonable six-month plan; doing only Google leaves you without the credential that opens federal and contractor roles.
