Degree
No degree is legally required to work as a Software Engineer and no licence or mandatory certification exists, but the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that software developers typically need a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology or a related field, and large-employer screening still assumes one. A self-taught candidate has to replace that signal with deployed products, merged pull requests and a referral.

A Software Engineer is a person who writes, reviews, tests and maintains the code that runs a company's product, working inside one codebase with other engineers through pull requests, automated tests and a deployment pipeline, and staying responsible for the result after it ships. A software engineer turns requirements into working, maintained systems. A software engineer turns requirements into working, maintained systems. In practice that means reading far more code than you write, breaking a vague ask into small changes, writing tests, getting code reviewed, shipping behind a flag, and being on the hook when it breaks. Titles vary (software developer, backend engineer, full-stack engineer, SDE) but the day-to-day is similar: a queue of tickets, a code review cycle, a deploy pipeline, and a Slack channel where things go wrong.

People who thrive are the ones who enjoy debugging more than they enjoy tutorials. The job rewards persistence at a broken thing for four hours, comfort with ambiguity, and writing that a stranger can follow. It punishes people who need a clear syllabus. A degree is not legally or structurally required, and a meaningful share of working engineers do not have a CS degree, but the screening system assumes one, so a self-taught candidate has to replace the degree signal with something a hiring manager can click on: deployed projects, merged pull requests in real repositories, and people who will vouch for them.

The honest tradeoff in 2026: pay is still excellent and the top end is extraordinary, but the entry-level door is narrower than it was in 2021. Indeed's software-development postings index sat at 76.1 on 4 September 2026 against a February 2020 baseline of 100, while postings across all US occupations sat at 102.4. The mid-career and senior market is healthy; the zero-experience market is crowded. Plan for 12-24 months of preparation and a job hunt measured in hundreds of applications unless you have referrals.

Why Software Engineer pay is high

Software has near-zero marginal cost of distribution, so one engineer's output is copied to every customer a company has. A payments change that lifts conversion 0.3% at a company processing $4bn a year is worth more than the engineer's entire compensation, and the firm cannot buy that outcome off the shelf because the code is specific to its own systems. Firms therefore compete for a fairly small pool of people who can be trusted with production, and they compete with equity as well as cash, which is why reported total compensation (Levels.fyi US median $195,000) runs far above the BLS wage median of $135,980 that mostly captures base salary across all employers, including small non-tech firms.

These are base-salary figures in US dollars as of September 2026, synthesised from BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, widened with Levels.fyi total-compensation reports. Pay varies about 20-40% by metro.

Two different numbers are both true. BLS OEWS (May 2025) puts the software developer median wage at $135,980, with the bottom 10% under $82,460 and the top 10% over $214,670 across 1,717,800 US jobs; that survey is mostly base pay and includes insurers, hospitals and government contractors. Levels.fyi, which skews toward large tech and to people who negotiate, reports US software engineer total compensation of $100,000 (10th pct), $137,944 (25th), $195,000 (median), $280,000 (75th) and $388,000 (90th) from 51,715 reported packages as of 15 September 2026. Entry-level reports on Levels.fyi (n=7,852) run $80,000 / $143,750 / $222,000 at the 10th / 50th / 90th percentiles, but that sample is dominated by new grads at companies that pay top of market; a first job at a non-tech employer or an agency is more realistically $70,000-$95,000. Equity is the difference at senior levels: the Levels.fyi base median is $160,000 against a total median of $195,000. BLS projects 10% employment growth for software developers, QA analysts and testers from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 106,100 openings per year across the group. That is the ten-year view. The near-term view is harder: Indeed's software-development job postings index was 76.1 on 4 September 2026 against a February 2020 baseline of 100, while the all-occupations index was 102.4 the same day, so software hiring is roughly a quarter below pre-pandemic levels while the overall labour market is slightly above it. The gap falls hardest on candidates with no professional experience. Automation risk is medium rather than high: AI coding tools have compressed the value of writing boilerplate, which is exactly what junior work used to be, while raising the value of people who can review, integrate, debug and take responsibility for a system. Treat the assistants as a required tool, not a threat, and expect to be interviewed on judgement rather than syntax recall.

No certification is required or expected for a Software Engineer role, and nobody is hired as a developer because of one. The closest thing to real screening value is the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate (SAA-C03) at $150 for the exam and 80 to 150 study hours, which helps engineers moving into cloud-heavy teams or arriving from an information technology background. Harvard's CS50x is a curriculum rather than a credential: free to audit, $219 for the verified certificate, and worth its 100 to 200 hours only for someone with no formal education signal at all.

Software Engineer interview questions and format

A Software Engineer hiring loop is typically four to six stages over three to six weeks: a 30-minute recruiter screen, an online assessment or a two-to-four-hour take-home, a 45 to 60 minute technical phone screen with live coding, then an onsite of two coding rounds, one system design round and one behavioural round. The live coding screen filters the most candidates, because it tests thinking out loud under a clock rather than the ability to build software.

Typically four to six stages: recruiter screen (30 min), an online assessment or take-home (2-4 hours), a technical phone screen with live coding (45-60 min), then an onsite loop of two coding rounds, one system design round (lighter for juniors) and one behavioural round. Junior loops lean on fundamentals, debugging and your projects; senior loops lean on design and tradeoffs. Expect to be asked to extend or debug your own take-home live.

Can I really get hired as a Software Engineer in 2026 without a computer science degree?

Yes, and BLS does not list a specific degree as a licence requirement, but be clear-eyed: the degree is a screening shortcut, and without it you need substitutes recruiters can verify in 30 seconds. In practice that means a deployed product with real users, merged pull requests in a repository someone has heard of, and at least one internal referral. Candidates who get hired without degrees almost always have at least two of those three.

How long does it take to go from zero to a first Software Engineer job?
