What it is
The CPA is the state-issued accounting licence that carries the legal authority to sign an audit opinion in the United States, earned by passing four four-hour Uniform CPA Examination sections - three Core plus one Discipline - and meeting the education and supervised-experience rules of your state board, issued by AICPA and NASBA (licensed by individual US state boards of accountancy).
Exam fee
USD 268.59 NASBA section fee (effective 4 July 2026) plus jurisdiction application fees. (AICPA and NASBA (licensed by individual US state boards of accountancy), )
All-in cost
Total realistic cost is $3,000 to $6,800 in US dollars, including membership, required education, study materials and one exam sitting.
Study time
Candidates report 320 to 500 study hours over 8 to 24 months.
Pass rate
the AICPA publishes rates every quarter: about 43% for Financial Accounting and Reporting and 48% for Auditing in 2026, against about 67% for Regulation and Information Systems and 79% for Tax Compliance and Planning.
Prerequisites
Set by your state board: usually a bachelor's degree plus 150 semester hours, or 120 hours plus two years of experience in a growing number of states.
Renewal
A state licence renewed every one to three years, typically 40 CPE hours a year including ethics, plus a state renewal fee.
Pay impact
The AICPA reports that CPAs earn roughly 10-15% more than non-certified accountants on average, with the gap widening sharply at senior levels where sign-off authority and public-accounting partnership require the licence. Robert Half's annual Accounting and Finance Salary Guide reports a similar 5-15% premium for the credential. (Becker, CPA Salary Insights, updated 20 February 2026, citing Becker's 2026 Accounting Salary Guide, )
Verdict
The CPA is worth it if you are going into public accounting, want to run an accounting function, or want the legal authority to sign audits, where it is not optional and firms usually pay for the review course; it is not worth it for investment roles, startups or corporate strategy, where the 150-hour requirement is an expensive detour.

What is the CPA?

The CPA is the state-issued accounting licence that carries the legal authority to sign an audit opinion in the United States, earned by passing four four-hour Uniform CPA Examination sections - three Core plus one Discipline - and meeting the education and supervised-experience rules of your state board, issued by AICPA and NASBA (licensed by individual US state boards of accountancy). It is also written as Certified Public Accountant, CPA licence, CPA license, Uniform CPA Examination, US CPA.

The CPA licence is the legal credential for public accounting in the United States: only a CPA can sign an audit opinion. Since the CPA Evolution redesign the Uniform CPA Examination has six sections in a 3+1 structure - three Core sections (Auditing and Attestation, Financial Accounting and Reporting, Taxation and Regulation) that everyone takes, plus one Discipline section chosen from Business Analysis and Reporting, Information Systems and Control, or Tax Compliance and Planning. Each section is four hours, and candidates have a rolling window (18 months in most jurisdictions, extended to 30 months in many states from 2024) to pass all four.

It is aimed at people building a career in audit, tax, technical accounting, controllership or forensic accounting, and at anyone who wants the option of signing off on financial statements. The licence is issued by state boards, not the AICPA, so education and experience rules vary: most states require 150 semester hours plus one year of supervised experience, though a growing number now offer a 120-hour-plus-two-years alternative pathway. Outside accounting proper the CPA is a solid but not decisive signal - it helps in FP&A, corporate development and transaction services, and it is the standard route to a controller or CFO seat at a mid-market company.

Prerequisites
Set by your state board, not the AICPA. Most jurisdictions require a bachelor's degree plus 150 semester hours of college credit (including specified accounting and business coursework) to be licensed, with many allowing you to sit at 120 hours. Since 2024-2026 a growing number of states have added an alternative pathway of a bachelor's degree (120 hours) plus two years of experience. Licensure also requires one to two years of supervised experience verified by an active CPA and, in most states, the AICPA Ethics exam.
Renewal
State-issued licence renewed every one to three years. Typical requirement is 40 CPE hours per year or 80 per two-year cycle, including an ethics component, plus a state renewal fee that is usually USD 50-200. Requirements and audit rules vary by jurisdiction.
Pay impact
The AICPA reports that CPAs earn roughly 10-15% more than non-certified accountants on average, with the gap widening sharply at senior levels where sign-off authority and public-accounting partnership require the licence. Is the CPA worth it in 2026?

The CPA is worth it if you are going into public accounting, want to run an accounting function, or want the legal authority to sign audits, where it is not optional and firms usually pay for the review course; it is not worth it for investment roles, startups or corporate strategy, where the 150-hour requirement is an expensive detour.

The CPA is worth it if you are going into public accounting, want to run an accounting function, or want the legal authority to sign audits - in those paths it is not optional, and firms usually pay for the review course and give study leave. It is also the most reliable credential in finance for converting a non-elite degree into a stable, well-paid career, and the licence travels well into internal audit, tax, forensic work and controllership. It is not worth it if you want investment roles, startups or general corporate strategy: the 150-hour requirement is an expensive detour, the material is compliance-heavy, and hiring managers in those fields care about modelling and deal reps. It is also a poor fit if you are not prepared for the grind of four exams in an 18- to 30-month window while working busy season, which is where most candidates stall. Check your specific state board before committing, because the 150-hour rule is currently being rewritten jurisdiction by jurisdiction and the cheaper 120-hour-plus-experience pathway may already be open to you.

How to study for the CPA

The cheapest realistic path is Gleim at about USD 1,600 to USD 2,300 for all four sections, or UWorld's Premier tier at USD 1,999, against Becker's USD 2,499 to USD 3,799 - and most public accounting employers reimburse whichever you choose. Budget 320 to 500 hours in total, weighted toward Financial Accounting and Reporting at about 130 hours, spread over 8 to 24 months.

CPA FAQ

How much does the CPA exam itself cost in 2026?

The NASBA section fee is USD 268.59 in most US jurisdictions from 4 July 2026, confirmed on the Virginia Board of Accountancy fee schedule, so four sections cost about USD 1,074. Texas, Arizona, Mississippi and Guam changed on 1 August 2026 and paid USD 265.57 until then. On top of that come state application and evaluation fees, typically USD 100 to USD 350, and each failed section costs the full section fee again. The real expense is the review course: USD 1,600 to USD 3,800, which most public accounting employers reimburse.

Which CPA Discipline section should I pick: BAR, ISC or TCP?

It makes no difference to the licence you receive, so pick the one closest to your day job. On the latest cumulative 2026 rates, Tax Compliance and Planning is the easiest at about 79% and suits tax candidates; Information Systems and Control sits at about 67% and suits IT audit and advisory; Business Analysis and Reporting is the hardest Discipline at about 44% and suits technical accounting and valuation. Note that Financial Accounting and Reporting, a Core section everyone must take, is now the lowest-scoring section overall at roughly 43%.

Do I still need 150 credit hours to become a CPA in 2026?

In most states, yes, for licensure - though you can usually sit the exam at 120 hours. A growing number of jurisdictions have added an alternative pathway of a bachelor's degree at 120 hours plus two years of experience since 2024, and the rules changed in many states during 2025 and 2026. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics still states that all states require 150 semester hours, which is now behind the legislative changes. Confirm with your own state board before enrolling in a master's degree you may not need.

How long do I have to pass all four CPA exam sections?

A rolling window that starts when you pass your first section. NASBA's model rule extended it from 18 months to 30 months, and most jurisdictions have adopted the 30-month window, but a handful have not, so check your own state board. If the window closes you lose credit for the earliest section passed and pay the section fee again to retake it. In practice the 30-month rule has taken most of the pressure off candidates working through busy season, which is where the majority of stalled attempts used to happen.

Do I really need a CPA review course, or can I self-study?

Practically, you need one. Pass rates for the hardest sections sit in the low 40s, and the exam is not well served by textbooks alone, because the task-based simulations require practice in the actual interface. Budget USD 1,600 to USD 3,800 - Gleim at the low end, Becker at the high end, UWorld in between - unless your employer pays, which most public accounting firms do as a matter of course. The AICPA's Blueprints and free sample tests are worth using alongside a course, but they are a specification, not a teaching resource.

How long does it take to pass the CPA exam while working full time?

Eight to 24 months, and 12 to 18 is the common answer for someone working full time. Total study time runs 320 to 500 hours, weighted heavily toward Financial Accounting and Reporting at around 130 hours, with Auditing, Regulation and your Discipline at 80 to 100 hours each. Most candidates take one section per quarter, which fits the 30-month rolling window with room for one failure. The binding constraint for public accounting candidates is busy season: January to April is largely lost, so plan sittings around it rather than through it.

Is the CPA worth it in 2026 for a career changer from another industry?

Yes, if you are willing to do the 150 hours and start in public accounting. The CPA is the most reliable credential in finance for converting a non-elite degree into a stable, well-paid career, and the licence travels into internal audit, tax, forensic work and controllership. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for accountants and auditors at USD 83,680 as of May 2025, with about 115,300 openings a year. The obstacles are real: the education requirement can mean extra coursework, and the entry-level grind through busy season is where most career changers quit.

CPA vs CFA: which should I take first for a finance career?

They open different doors. The CPA is a state licence for audit, tax, technical accounting and controllership, requires 150 semester hours in most states, and is the only credential that lets you sign an audit opinion - the Securities and Exchange Commission requires a licensed CPA on any report filed with it. The CFA points at investment seats and costs USD 3,520 to USD 4,570 in exam fees across 900 to 1,200 study hours. If you are early in an accounting or corporate finance career, take the CPA first: employers pay for it, give study leave, and it is the faster of the two.
